We’re pleased to announce that Elysium has achieved ISO 14001 certification, the internationally recognised standard for environmental management.
For us, this is an important milestone, but it isn’t a sudden change in direction. We’ve always tried to run Elysium responsibly and make decisions with sustainability in mind. What ISO 14001 gives us is a much more structured way of doing that, and importantly, a way of demonstrating that we’re doing it rather than simply saying that we are.
What is ISO 14001?
ISO 14001 is an international standard for an Environmental Management System (EMS). In simple terms, it provides a framework for understanding how a business affects the environment, managing those impacts, setting objectives and continually looking for ways to improve.
It’s not simply about having an environmental policy on a website. Organisations need to understand their environmental impacts, identify relevant requirements, establish processes and objectives, monitor performance, carry out audits and continually improve their environmental management.
Certification also involves assessment by an independent certification body, giving customers and partners confidence that the system is actually being implemented.
What are we doing to be more sustainable?
ISO 14001 formalises the way we manage our environmental impact, but the work behind it is already part of how we operate.
Our focus includes reducing our carbon emissions, using resources responsibly, considering environmental impact when making business decisions and continually looking for practical ways to improve.
We’ve also published our Carbon Reduction Plan, which sets out our approach to reducing our emissions and the steps we’re taking to get there.
Why does it matter to us?
For us, being a sustainable business should be about the decisions we make every day, rather than something we simply talk about in our marketing.
Achieving ISO 14001 means we’ve taken that a step further. We now have a formal management system around our approach and it means our environmental commitments are backed up by evidence, processes and ongoing accountability.
Environmental responsibility isn’t something that gets finished when a certificate arrives - for us, continuous improvement is a fundamental part of ISO 14001.
We’re proud to have achieved the certification, but more importantly, we’re pleased to have a framework that helps us keep improving how we operate and demonstrates the progress we’re making.
